The studio space is mostly complete and is now ready for use! Our old computer lab was gutted and cleared of old computers and tables and turned into this! We added studs, drywall, baseboards, carpet, paint, risers, the audience mural, stage lighting, TV, surround sound, green screen, furniture, cameras, and a red carpet (of course!). There is still a little work to be done as we perfect the acoustics and lighting in the room, but the majority of the renovation work is now finished!
Leave us a comment and tell us what you think of the new space! The SpotEd Media project was featured in an article published in the South Hills Record! Thanks to Stephanie Hacke and Kristina Serafini for coming to Jefferson to take pictures and write the story! Click on the link below to read the article.
Painting finished....check.
Carpet installed.....check. TV mounted.....check. Mrs. Yocco and Mr. Kline have been working with their students to develop and film a talk show interviewing characters from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Today was the first day of filming! Since the SpotEd Studio is still being completed, the students used the STEAM lab next door and broke out some of the new film equipment. Some students were actors and actresses, others were operating cameras and microphones, and some were directors. Everyone did a great job! Thanks to Mrs. Yocco and Mr. Kline for braving the new equipment and getting things rolling!
Videos of the Characters' Corner production will be online soon. We have been busy ordering equipment and supplies as we also begin final renovations of the SpotEd studio. One half of the studio is being turned into a stage area where most of the filming will occur. We anchored studs to the walls, ran conduit for wires, and began hanging drywall. Soon, we plan on painting, laying carpet, and finishing with baseboards to complete the stage. Below, enjoy the first videos to be produced with the new Brinno time lapse camera! With funding secured, we have begun the second phase of renovations to complete the new SpotEd Studio. Whiteboards have been removed, cabinets moved, and wiring is being relocated. In the near future, we will begin putting up new drywall and installing a carpet for the stage area. Special thanks to Mr. Paxon for all of his work in the renovation process!
I am excited to announce that the SpotEd program at Jefferson Elementary has been approved for funding by the Spark Fund for Early Learning at the Sprout Fund! This grant will provide $12,000 to purchase equipment, furniture, and other resources to complete renovations of the new studio and expand the program within our school. Spark is a program of the Sprout Fund that supports projects in the greater Pittsburgh region that help children develop hands-on skills and digital literacies by expanding their capacity "to do" as well as "to know."
We enjoyed the STEAM Showcase hosted by the AIU yesterday! Lots of great ideas and inspirational projects are underway to include technology into the school curriculum across the Pittsburgh region. We also had the privilege of meeting Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch. His organization, Best of the Batch, supports Pittsburgh neighborhoods, kids, and education. Thanks to all involved in supporting this event and the grant program!
